Be You: Ellie’s Message of Inclusion and Empowerment on World Down Syndrome Day:
Ellie is a model who is breaking down barriers and making her mark on the fashion world. We spoke to Ellie this World Down Syndrome Day about her lifelong dream of modelling, the importance of disability representation in media, and how her work is sharing a powerful message of inclusion and empowerment for all.
What inspired you to become a model?
I always wanted to be a model. From when I was young I loved dressing up and having make-up on and doing pretend catwalks.
I never saw anyone that looked like me in magazines or on TV, so I had to follow my dream.
How do you think the media and fashion industries can better support and celebrate models with disabilities?
The media and fashion industries can better support and celebrate models with disabilities by actively seeking out and featuring them in campaigns, runway shows, and editorials, promoting diverse representation.
Seeing models with Down Syndrome in the media can have a massive positive impact on individuals with Down Syndrome. It can show empowerment, representation, and inclusion, allowing them to see themselves. It can also inspire confidence and self-esteem so they can achieve their goals. It can also promote acceptance and understanding of individuals with Down Syndrome.
What advice would you give to other individuals with Down Syndrome who aspire to become models?
My advice would be to go and achieve your dream. Be you, be confident, and don’t let anyone put you down and say you can’t do something you want to do.
I have broken down barriers and achieved so much already in my career.
I hope to convey that having Down’s syndrome doesn’t stop you achieving anything. We might be a bit slower with some things or learning but we catch up! We are determined and I always knew that one day I would be known throughout the world. I’ve had the best support in achieving this because I was believed in.
